Bhaktapur, Nepal - Pottery Square - kiln

Previous | Home | Next

This outdoor kiln is constructed of layers of straw, pottery, straw, pottery, straw, pottery and then covered with ash to create maximum heat. A few holes are punched in so that the oxygen, carbon dioxide and smoke can escape.

The fire needs to reach everywhere otherwise you get the black patina on the pots. In order to acheive this a very dry straw that's been dried in the sun for 3-4 days is used.

It takes 3 days to complete the pottery in the kiln.
