Shwezigon Pagoda

Bagan, Myanmar (Pagan, Burma)

The lower terraces of this important national monument were built by King Anawrahta in about 1070 and the gold stupa structure completed by his son King Kyinsattha in about 1085 as a work of merit, actually double encasing the original stupa his father built. It's built of sandstone carried from the quarry at Turintaung Range 7 miles away using the labor of a chain of people. This stupa favors the more massive Pyu architecture. It is probably the most visited shrine (and so receives more donations than any other) in all of Myanmar by Buddhist pilgrims.
