Bagan, Myanmar (Pagan, Burma)

Shwehsandaw Zedi (also spelled Shwesandaw) or stupa was built by King Anawrahta after his conquest of Thaton in 1057 A.D. Sacred hairs of the Buddha are said to be enshrined here, but this structure is also a monument to the king's military victory. In 1957, it was renovated and whitewashed by the residing monk and trustees, hence its current color. It's a steep climb and so offers a panoramic view of the temples and stupas of Bagan. This makes it a very popular destination for tour groups to take sunset pictures.
