Sankar Village

Inle Lake, Myanmar (Burma)

Back to Burma Home Page

Sankar Village is located at the southern end of Inle Lake. It has only been open to visitors since 2003 and it still does not attract as many visitors as other areas reacheable by boat on the lake. We were required to go with a Pa-O guide and pay a nominal fee of $5.00 each. This was our second Pa-O guide and he was just as delightful as the first. His name was Nyi-Nyi, he spoke excellent English and even got us into a Pa-O wedding, which I've got a short video of below the pictures here.

Since we were there in November, which is dry season, only a few stupas were in the water, however when the rains come the water rises a great deal. There's a monastery there, we saw 2 monks and with our guide went in and had tea with one of the monks and his cat with our guide translating. Because this vilage is off the beaten track, it's possible that these old stupas will remain rather than being replaced by newer stupas for merit as we saw at every other "stupa forest" we visited.
