Lawkananda pagoda (also spelled Lokananda) is located south of New Bagan and Thripyitsaya Village overlooking the Ayeyarwaddy River and is one of four pagodas built by King Anawrahta in 1059 A.D. to enshrine the replica of Buddha's sacred tooth, brought from Sri Lanka. According to Guide to Bagan Monuments, King Anawrahta was most likely the first monument builder to change the bell shape from the older Pyu style to Mynamar type. Lokananda literally means "Joy to the world."
