Lawkahteikpan Temple is a small gem of a temple located on the way to Shwesandaw Pagoda. It was built by King Kyansitta's successor, Sithu I and literally means "Adorning the Top of the World." A Burmese archeaologist named Bomu Ba Shin 'discovered' this temple in 1958 and wrote an entire monograph on it (which is long out of print). It dates to somewhere around 1165 A.D. This temple is well worth visiting to view the interior plaster walls covered top to bottom with colorfully painted scenes portraying events of the Buddha legend (bodawin in Burmese) and Jataka stories.
