Ananda Temple or Ananda Guphaya was built by King Kyansittha in 1091 A.D. in the shape of a perfect Greek cross. Two narrow corridors run parallel to each other on all four sides of the temple with vaulted ceilings. They are connected by low and narrow passages with light coming in at each end. Dormer windows provide natural light illuminating the four standing Buddha images at the center of each of the four sides. Ananda is one of the finest examples of the Early Pagan architecture.
