The combination of being in an ancient rainforest with the opportunity to see a broad variety of flora and fauna made this an unforgettable experience. The magic of the rainforest was manifest in the soft mist caught in the trees, the sounds of birds and gibbons calling to each other, and the amazing display of stars at night. On one hand, the rainforest which has existed in this area for a hundred million years feels like it is immutable; it will go on forever. On the other hand, the fragility of this virgin forest is readily apparent in the contrast between the conservation area and the areas immediately outside which have been subjected to logging and the proliferation of palm oil plantations. We were priviledged to observe a nice variety of wildlife. The highlight was seeing 3 orangutans during our stay, the first of which was from the road as we drove in. We saw other primates as well including long-tailed macaques and red leaf monkeys. The red leaf monkeys put on a special show for us during our last meal at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge. It is notoriously difficult to animals in the wild, so while our photos do not reflect the range of animal life we observed, I hope they will evoke for you the possibility of seeing animals in their own habitat. |
