I learned from a local that there would be a cremation on the beach at a particular time one day, and it would be for a prominent man. I took a walk towards the beach at the stated time and got caught up in the parade. The dead man, who was a member of the highest caste, was being carried in the belly of a large, colorful bull, carried atop the shoulders of many male family members. Once the procession arrived at the beach, I spoke with a man who knew English very well - he had spent a few years living in LA - he pointed to a mound of ashes nearby and said, someone not so important was cremated earlier today. At the time, it had been only 6 months since my father died, so the cremation took on special significance for me. My father had been cremated, but, of course with none of the public fanfare. It was okay with the Balinese that there were so many tourist spectators!
